Seeing the Tulips at Keukenhof Gardens, the Netherlands

Europe travel by Rin
Colorful tulip fields at Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse, the Netherlands

No one visits Keukenhof without striking a flower-sniffing pose. Trust us, out of hundreds of photos, this pose is sure to make it onto social media. So when is the best time to go?

Keukenhof's opening dates vary from year to year, so please wait for each year's announcement. It is usually open from late March to mid-May. The best time is mid-April, when the flowers are at their most beautiful, which suits Thai travelers perfectly because it falls during Songkran.

There are only 2-3 big, nationally famous Dutch flower fields in bloom, located around Amsterdam and in the north of the country. Rin will take you to see them to your heart's content, because we like to explore in depth. Sometimes Keukenhof alone is not enough, so you will know what other choices you have.

1 Keukenhof

Keukenhof is in the town of Lisse, about 40 km from the capital, Amsterdam. It lies in the Bollenstreek, the most important tulip-growing area. The festival has been organized by local people since 1950. This is one of the most beautiful flower gardens in Europe.

  • Over 200 rai of grounds, with 800 varieties and more than 7 million flowers.
  • A different theme each year.
  • Admission is only 6 euros.
  • Open 08:00 - 19:30
  • The best time to visit Keukenhof is early in the morning when it opens, or 2-3 hours before closing, chasing the sunset, because the sun is not too harsh. Coming in the strong afternoon sun is the least favorable.
  • If you would like to rent a bike to ride around, you can rent one here. Great! Cycle around the town and see tulips to your heart's content. For example, after leaving Keukenhof, ride between Hillegom and Warmond, where you will see tulip fields planted in alternating colors, just like a postcard, or rather the pictures shared online.

2 Aalsmeer

Just 30 minutes from Amsterdam, there are magnificent tulip gardens. It is also home to the Aalsmeer flower market, the world's largest international trading center for plants and flowers. Try getting up early to watch the flower auction, open to the public from 7.00 to 9.00. Every day, 19 million flowers are sold, and it is very lively.

3 Noordoostpolder

If you would like to see more gardens, we recommend Noordoostpolder in the province of Flevoland. It lies in the opposite direction from Keukenhof, about 85 km north of Amsterdam.

Driving through this area, you will see the longest stretches of tulips in Europe along both sides of the road. You can visit from mid-April to early May. There are special signs in this area clearly marking the tulip driving route. It is also great for cycling past the tulip fields.

4 Other towns, such as Alkmaar in the north, also have beautiful gardens to see. Flevoland DrontenOr visit the Poldertuin garden in Anna Paulowna, nicknamed the little Keukenhof. Volunteers come together to plant beautiful flowers and tulips. It is free to visit all year round, but at its most beautiful from mid-March to mid-May. This is the most authentic way to travel ^_^
