If you want to see Tromsø from the water without spending a whole day, this trip is a great fit. The Hermes II, a wooden boat built in 1917 and beautifully restored, takes you cruising along the Tromsø Sound, with plenty of chances to photograph the town and the mountains behind it. Along the way, your host tells the story of the boat and the places you pass, in both Norwegian and English.
It suits families well, as children may get to try steering the boat with the captain's help, and older travelers can join comfortably too. On board there is a warm cabin, a toilet, and warm overalls and blankets to borrow. Coffee and tea are served, while snacks and soft drinks can be bought on board. Bringing your own food and drinks is not allowed.
Dress warmer than usual, because it is windier and colder out on the water than on land. Bring a hat, gloves and warm shoes. Arrive at the pier at least 15 minutes before departure, and note that in unsettled weather the trip may be postponed or cancelled.
