This half-day cruise departs from central Tromsø aboard Brim Explorer's hybrid-electric catamaran. Along the way, enjoy views of colorful houses, small farms, and coastal roads from the water. As the boat approaches Ramfjorden, it slows down and switches to its electric motor, quietly gliding into the fjord. The entire cruise runs on electric power for about half the time. At the small island of Holmen, once a fishing station and military lookout, the crew may deploy an underwater drone, streaming live footage of starfish, kelp forests, crabs, and cod to the onboard screens (weather and sea currents permitting).
The route passes the Olavsvern submarine base, carved into the mountain during the Cold War. Your guide will share stories about this secret base built to accommodate NATO submarines and designed to withstand nuclear threats. Weather and sea conditions permitting, the boat will dock at Rya for a visit to two small museums, traditional fish-drying racks, vintage fishing gear, and fishermen's historic photos and clothing. Learn how cod fishing shaped life in northern Norway, and taste local specialties like dried fish or seasonal roe. On the return journey, pass Tromsøya and Håkøya islands while listening to stories of World War 2, including the sinking of the battleship Tirpitz.
This trip is not a whale-watching tour; it is ideal for anyone who wants a relaxing fjord sightseeing experience. Difficulty level is easy with no age restrictions, and guided commentary is in English. On board, you'll find heated indoor lounges, restrooms, Wi-Fi, and complimentary drinking water. A café sells food and drinks, though outside food and beverages are not allowed on board. Dogs and cats are welcome on a leash. Departures are at 11:00, 11:30, or 12:00 in February and March, and at 13:00 in September and October. Please dress warmly with a hat, gloves, and weather-appropriate footwear.
