Why is Tromsø called the Paris of the North? This walking tour finds the answer in the town area within its original boundaries, set out in 1794, from Strandtorget in the south to Skansen in the north. Along the way you see old buildings, statues and murals that tell the stories of the people who lived as pioneers in the Arctic.
The stories include world-famous explorers such as Roald Amundsen and local heroes such as Wanny Woldstad and Henry Rudi, the king of the polar bears. The tour includes admission to the Polar Museum, which brings these stories closer, and ends at a historic bar that reflects the city's seafaring culture. It suits history lovers and first-time visitors.
The tour runs only on Wednesdays at 10:30 and Saturdays at 15:00. The end time fits with most Northern Lights tours that depart in the evening, so you can schedule both on the same day. The difficulty is easy, with groups of up to 15 people. Dress warmly and wear shoes suitable for walking on slippery paths.
