Norwegians often say they are born with skis on their feet. This activity invites you to experience winter like a local in Tromsø through cross-country skiing. Starting at Tromsø Skistadion, your guide will fit you with skis, boots, and poles, then teach basic techniques on a short training track until everyone feels confident and safe before setting off.
The lesson structure was designed in collaboration with Erik Valnes, an Olympic champion from Tromsø and co-owner of SkiTromsø, helping beginners progress quickly and naturally in a relaxed, non-competitive setting (your guide is an experienced local skier, not Erik Valnes himself). Afterwards, glide along scenic beginner trails atop Tromsø island amidst quiet snowy forests. The guide adapts the pace from an easy stroll to a brisker glide based on the group's preference, with plenty of stops for photos.
About halfway through, pause for a warm drink and a traditional Norwegian snack while hearing stories about skiing and daily Arctic life from your guide. Continue practicing until you return to the starting point to return your gear. The tour lasts about 2.5 hours with morning and afternoon sessions available from November to April. Group size is 2–16 people, ages 6 and up. Guides speak English, German, or Norwegian. Please dress warmly with gloves and a warm hat.
