Northern Lights chase by Tromsø Friluftsenter, operating aurora tours in Tromsø for over 20 years, running from Sep-Mar. Meet in front of Scandic Ishavshotel in the city center, with a group size of up to 19 people. The evening begins with a short film exploring both the science and myths of the Northern Lights before heading out in search of clear skies, which on some nights means driving as far as Finland.

If the weather at the operator's base allows, visit a historic coastal farm to hear about coastal life dating back to the late 19th century, and sit inside a traditional lavvu tent learning about the heritage of the Sámi, Kven, and local people. If chasing elsewhere, the coordinators prepare a campfire, seating, coffee, hot chocolate, tea, warm soup, and chocolate cake. The coordinator takes portraits under the Northern Lights for free download, assists with camera or phone settings, and provides a booklet with vintage photographs and Tromsø stories.

Thermal suits are provided to wear over your clothes, but you should still dress warmly with suitable boots, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. During icy conditions, bringing crampons or ice grips is recommended. Minimum age is 5 years, and vegan options are not available. If the forecast is very poor, the operator may offer the option to cancel for a refund prior to departure. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon dependent on the weather, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. Our team is happy to check availability and book this tour for you.
