This full-day tour departs from downtown Tromsø on a hybrid-electric boat custom-built by Brim Explorer. Sailing through stunning fjords, snow-capped mountains, and the Arctic sea, the vessel heads toward the whales' feeding grounds. Daily destinations vary depending on where the whales are located, as our experienced captain and guides read natural signs to track the pods.
Once whales are sighted, the ship shuts off its diesel engine and glides quietly on electric power, significantly reducing noise and vibration. The crew maintains a respectful distance without chasing them, allowing the whales to swim and feed undisturbed. Typically, electric propulsion accounts for about 10% of the journey. Along the way, the English-speaking guide shares insights into whale migration and feeding habits, as well as Arctic nature, history, and coastal culture. You may spot orcas, humpback whales, fin whales, or other marine wildlife, though sightings cannot be guaranteed as they are wild animals.
On board, enjoy comfortable, heated indoor saloons with large panoramic windows, spacious exterior decks for photography, free Wi-Fi, restrooms, and a café and bar where food and drinks can be purchased (outside food and beverages are not permitted). The tour runs from October through January and is rated easy, though sea conditions can be choppy at times. If prone to motion sickness, please bring seasickness medication, and dress warmly in layers—including thermal wool clothing, wind- and waterproof outerwear, hats, and gloves. If weather conditions prevent whale watching, the itinerary may be modified to an Arctic Fjord Cruise instead.
