This trip departs from Tromsø at 10:00 AM with about a 30-minute drive to Kvaløya island, then continues along the coastal road to Sommarøy. Along the way, there are multiple stops to admire fjords, mountains, white-sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Operated by Wondering Reindeer with a Sámi coordinator, this tour runs from October to March for groups of 4–22 people.
The coordinator shares the history of both reindeer-herding and coastal Sámi people, cultural changes, and modern ways of life, as well as the Sámi names and origins of local fjords and mountains. Around 12:30 PM, stop for lunch at the seaside restaurant at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel, choosing from options like burgers and fish soup, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices available. Finish with cake or fruit salad served with coffee or tea, before returning to Tromsø around 3:15 PM.
Along the way, you might spot reindeer, moose, otters, or eagles, though wildlife sightings in nature cannot be guaranteed. There is a short walk on snow off the path, so it is not suitable for small children or strollers. Please dress for the weather with comfortable walking shoes, a warm hat, and gloves on cold days (thermal suits and warm boots are available to borrow upon request).
