- Arctic Whale Tours · the Tromsø region
During the winter, orcas (killer whales) and humpback whales swim into the fjords of northern Norway to feed on schools of herring. This tour by Arctic Whale Tours departs from Vervet harbor in downtown Tromsø and sails north to where the whales gather. Along the way, you can admire snow-covered mountains, coastal villages, and the shifting colors of Arctic light throughout the day. Besides the two main whale species, you might also spot fin whales, dolphins, porpoises, and seabirds. However, as wildlife is part of nature, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
The vessel used is MS Alba, a catamaran built in Norway in 1975, now fitted with modern engines and equipped with a hydrophone to listen to underwater whale sounds. Inside, there is a heated cabin with panoramic windows, while outside features an open viewing deck, as well as an onboard restroom. The guide will share fascinating insights about whale behavior and the Arctic marine environment throughout the journey. When whales are spotted, the crew maintains a respectful distance following responsible whale-watching guidelines to avoid disturbing the animals.
The trip lasts approximately 8 hours (plus or minus 1 hour, depending on weather, sea conditions, and whale locations). Coffee, tea, and biscuits are provided on board, but meals are not included; please bring your own packed lunch and snacks. Dress in layers, wearing a windproof and waterproof outer jacket, a warm hat, gloves, and non-slip winter boots. Bring along a camera and a power bank. If you are prone to seasickness, take motion-sickness medication before departure. The difficulty level is easy, but wheelchairs and strollers cannot be accommodated on board. The tour departs with a minimum of 20 participants and may be canceled or rescheduled due to weather conditions.
