8 Foods You Shouldn't Miss When Visiting the Czech Republic

Guest writers

Czech food culture is influenced by Bohemian cuisine, with ham and strongly flavored sausages as highlights. Most dishes are high in fat. Today See You Again recommends dishes you really shouldn't miss when you visit Czechia.

1 Vepro knedlo zelo: roast pork knuckle

Boiled dumplings (knedliky), sauerkraut and a pork knuckle roasted over a hot fire until the skin is crisp and fragrant and the meat inside is tender. Served with sauerkraut and dumplings, this is a dish that, once you've tried it, you'll definitely want again.

2 Knedlik (dumplings)

Knedliky are soft boiled dumplings, a popular side dish for many main courses. They are topped with gravy and eaten with bread, sweet potato or bacon, and can also be eaten with fruit (plums).

3 Utopence

Pickled sausage that is slightly sour and rather rich, served with pickled onion. This dish goes wonderfully with beer.

4 Fried trout

Trout coated in flour and fried until golden and appetizing, served with mashed potatoes and pickled vegetables.

5 Gulas (goulash)

The Czech version focuses on beef stew with just a few vegetables, and must be eaten with boiled dumplings (knedliky). Besides beef, this dish is sometimes made with venison, chicken or even just vegetables.

6 Svickova na smetane

Roast beef sirloin served with a sweet cream sauce with carrots, a little whipped cream and a garnish of red cranberries. This dish should be eaten with dumplings so you can enjoy the sauce to the fullest.

7 Farmer’s cheese dumplings

Dense, chewy dumplings made from potato, eaten with apricot sauce, yogurt ice cream and cream. When everything is eaten together, the taste is similar to cheesecake.

8 Trdelnik dessert

Trdelnik is made from thin dough wrapped in a spiral around a wooden or metal rod, sprinkled with sugar and grilled over charcoal until the dough turns golden and the sugar melts into caramel. It is then rolled in a tray of sugar, cinnamon and chopped chestnuts, and you can add toppings as you like.
