Sam Phan Bok rocky Mekong River rapids at Pho Sai, Ubon Ratchathani

Sam Phan Bok, Ubon Ratchathani

At Sam Phan Bok, we recommend coming in the late afternoon. It is very beautiful, the water is clear and the rocks are red.
There are three key spots here: Sam Phan Bok rapids, Hat Hong beach and Hat Prakarang beach.

The first is a short walk from the parking area, and there is a shuttle if you don't feel like walking.
The other two are farther beyond the first. Walking there and back would be tiring, about 4 km, but there is a boat from the first spot. A round trip for the whole boat is 500 THB (the sun has set today, so we will go again tomorrow).

If you want to stay here, there is no accommodation at Sam Phan Bok, only restaurants. To stay overnight, go to Hat Salueng, about 10 km further up from Sam Phan Bok. There are few restaurants in that area, so we recommend eating at Sam Phan Bok.

Sam Phan Bok itself is a set of Mekong River rapids. When the water level drops, the rapids rise high, with a large island in the middle. This area is Sam Phan Bok. The highlight is walking through the channels between the rocks while looking at rock holes shaped like unusual things, such as Mickey Mouse, a single heart and a double heart.

Before coming here, call any accommodation to check whether the water has dropped enough for the rapids to appear. Don't come during the high-water season.
By the way, at the Sam Phan Bok rapids, if you have a pickup truck you can drive there yourself, as long as you can handle sand.
